You want your life to matter. I want my life to matter. There comes a time when every woman pauses to evaluate her impact.
Is what I’m doing even important?
Am I making a difference?
Are my efforts influencing anyone?
I recently attended the funeral of a friend’s mother-in-law. As I sat in the small but overcrowded sanctuary, I was captivated by the stories shared about this 80-year life. I never had the pleasure of meeting Becky, but it was clear she lived a life dedicated to service. She was fun and vivacious, and never met a stranger. Several testified to her loving hospitality and devotion to friends and family. She was creative, witty, and generous. Even in her final days, she was praying, smiling, and caring for her nurses and visitors.

My greatest personal takeaway from Becky’s legacy is that she faithfully taught Sunday School for over 25 years. It was noted that she would spend a few hours studying and prepping each week. Her precious and worn bible, shown here, was proudly on display after the ceremony.
Did you catch that?
Becky never spoke from a stage to a crowded auditorium, was never a guest on a podcast, and never published a book. But for a quarter of a century, she poured her heart and soul into studying God’s word, then shared her treasures with whoever showed up on Sunday morning.

Our culture measures influence by likes and followers, bank accounts, and accolades hanging on the wall. But, Jesus clearly came to reveal a Kingdom standard. He came to serve, and hence poured out His life as a living sacrifice. As Christ followers, we are called to adopt His heavenly measuring stick.
So, as you lead another board meeting, change another diaper, drive your parent to a doctor's appointment, cook another meal, teach a class, or program software, do so for the glory of God. The hug, smile, encouraging note, or pat on the back you share has greater influence than you realize.
And, may we all learn from the life of Becky: when we seek first to know and follow Him, He will make our impact great!
