Maybe you’ve been there - life has been stressful so you decide to treat yourself to a bit of pampering and book an appointment for a facial. This was me a few weeks ago, and for the most part, it was delightful! But, I couldn’t help but laugh at an interaction I had with the esthetician.

As I lay there, trying to relax, she said: “Don’t take this the wrong way, but…” (Never what you want to hear from someone examining your face, mind you!)
“…your skin is kind of….(pause to find the most tactful approach)… l a c k l u s t e r .”
The meaning of lackluster (in case you needed a better visual) is “lacking in sheen, brilliance, or vitality; dull, mediocre”. Suffice it to say I doubt there is a woman alive who would wish to be described in such a way! But, after my laughter at her observation, it was her explanation that stuck with me. She remarked that I was dehydrated and explained that a key to a vibrant exterior begins with what we intake. In other words, what we allow on the inside affects how we look on the outside. It reminds me of the saying: “Junk in, junk out.” This has applications for our entire being:
Mind: Our thought patterns have a profound impact on our behavior. When we are stuck in loops of negative self-talk, it poorly affects our mood, decision-making, interpersonal interactions, and our motivation. Junk in, junk out.
Body: Poor eating habits, lack of sleep, and dehydration affect our energy levels and skin conditions. Junk in, junk out.
Spirit: The same is true for our spiritual life. If we don’t “intake” time with God (prayer, worship, scripture, intentional time with other Christ followers), it perpetuates fear, doubt, and anxiety. Junk in, junk out.
When we notice some of these negative external red flags, we can use them as reminders to examine our habits. Are we filtering out the negative repetitive thoughts? Are we being mindful about what we eat and how we are treating our bodies? Are we prioritizing our time with God? No one wants a lackluster life. We all long to be known as women who are vivacious and luminous…in mind, body, and spirit! What steps can you take today in each of these categories? Be sure to share you plans and goals with a friend and ask for accountability; women are more likely to grow and succeed together! Here’s to a colorful life!
