Make it Meaningful

Updated: Jan 12

In the last year, God has revealed to me that I lack connection with others and quality relationships. I’m realizing that I feel safer when I keep at a distance and just go it alone. I am trying to stay curious and ask myself why I frequently choose to accomplish a task or numb out instead of making an effort to connect with friends.

quote from Maya Angelou

I am struck by the Maya Angelou quote: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” This is a great reminder that my daily projects won’t be remembered, and my work colleagues will not be sitting around me when I’m on my deathbed. A fulfilling life is about being present and engaging with friends and family.

Fortunately, God understands my tendencies and matched me with a spouse who knows when I need a nudge back to connection. Recently, my husband purchased a set of cards containing introspective questions intended to create intimacy through connection. Our responses help us discover new things about each other or relish in how well we know one another!

This simple activity makes us feel connected and more appreciative of the bond we share. That’s priceless! Meaningful conversations can help transform attitudes and create mutual respect. The beauty is that this practice isn’t unique to marriage. It can be applied to any relationship that we value. Open-ended questions have the power to connect.

This season, I’m inspired to be more intentional. I encourage you to do likewise – let’s choose to prioritize meaningful conversation! Here are some questions to ask your friends and family during upcoming gatherings:

  • What is a memory from your childhood that makes you feel thankful?

  • What is one challenge you overcame this year?

  • What is your favorite holiday tradition and why?

  • What would you like to incorporate into the holidays to make it more meaningful or fun?
