A few weeks ago, I dropped my son at the Charlotte airport for the first leg of his flight to study abroad for the fall semester. Like any anxious parent who just kissed her youngest goodbye, my eyes were glued to the Delta app, attentive to the plane's status in real time.
It didn't take long to realize that the plane was going in the opposite direction of its destination, the JFK airport in New York. Confused, I kept watching and waiting for it to turn around. The plane went all the way to Augusta, GA before finally flying on a course that pointed its nose to JFK. From my vantage point, it looked like something was wrong. Did hijackers take over? Is my son on the wrong flight? Is the pilot completely incompetent?
But the truth was, I didn't know what the pilot knew. I don't have her training or expertise. I'm sure the flight plan had something to do with the massive string of storms along the East Coast, and she was doing what was best to keep everyone safe and follow the wisest course of action given all the variables she was facing.
It later occurred to me that this is often how it is with life. From our vantage point, it can often be difficult to understand certain circumstances.
the relationship crumbles
the diagnosis hits home
the anxiety is blinding
the career move is unsatisfying
And, we are left crying out:
"God, what are You up to?"
"This course makes no sense!"
"We're going the wrong way!"
![Isaiah 55:8-9 God's ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/6baef7_8221a282ae3a484dbee9679a0bb51863~mv2.jpeg/v1/fill/w_980,h_452,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/6baef7_8221a282ae3a484dbee9679a0bb51863~mv2.jpeg)
I've often found comfort in Isaiah 55:8-9 and its reminder that I won't always understand what God is up to. And, while confusion can be frustrating, there is also liberation in letting go of the need to know. It's finding peace in the One who is in control.

Perhaps you are in such a season. For that, I am sorry. But, you have a God who is better and more capable than you know. So, you don't have to pace the aisle or reach for the parachute. Sit tight; your good Father knows what He is doing.
