Curiosity

We all want clarity. We seek clear answers to problems and step-by-step directions that lead to a definite result. Clarity produces comfort.

Ironically, one thing that is clear in reading scripture, Jesus' primary mode of communication was often anything but clear. He chose to teach and lead using parables that were often left open-ended, leaving His disciples scratching their heads in confusion and frustration.

This begs the question: Why? Why wouldn't Jesus just speak clearly and plainly? It seems as though He purposefully interacted with His followers in such a way, so there must be intentionality behind this mode of communication. Perhaps one reason is that He wanted to stir curiosity.

"Curiosity is one of the greatest secrets of happiness." - Bryant H McGill

If He spoke clearly, offering no space for questions, listeners would simply walk away without engaging. But, His ambiguity sparked a curiosity that drew people in, stirred their hearts, and opened their minds...if they let it.

There are so many benefits of curiosity...

Mind: A research study concluded that curiosity results in... an increase in positive emotions; an increased capacity for empathy which strengthens relationships and lowers levels of anxiety; and overall higher satisfaction with life.

Body: The human brain actually releases high levels of dopamine when encountering and engaging with new concepts and ideas.

Spirit: Our faith is only strengthened when we approach God with curiosity, with an open mind that He is bigger and better than we can ever imagine.

It's as if Jesus happened to understand how we are created as He interacted with people! He used and still uses His ambiguity to draw us in, to stir our hearts and minds to know and understand Him a little bit better. And, isn't this ultimately our goal as Christ followers after all?

Just curious...

If you could ask God one question, what would it be? Don't overthink it. What comes to mind? It could be a serious question or a lighthearted one. Whatever is true for you! Click the button below to share; including your name is optional.
